Paris France 1572 and the tension between protestant and Catholics is escalating. The Doctor leaves Steven at a tavern to visit the apothecary Charles Preslin and asks his companion to await his return. Steven joins a band of Huguenots led by Nicholas Muss and upon leaving the tavern they meet serving girl Anne Chaplet who works for the Catholic Abbot of Amboise. She voices rumours the Abbot is planning a massacre of Huguenots in Paris.

The Abbot is the Doctor's physical double and sends his secretary Colbert to find the missing Anne she spreads any rumours to protestants about the planned massacre. Steven later sees the Abbot and believes him to be the Doctor. Nicholas now thinks Steven is involved in the Abbot's Catholic Plot to assassinate Admiral de Coligny, protestant, voice and protector of the Huguenots from the king and the Abbot.

Anne and Steven meet with the Abbot Steven confirming his is not the Doctor and escape his clutches to warn Nicholas Muss of the assassination attempt of his master De Coligny. The latter is only wounded but the Abbot himself is murdered by his Catholic colleagues and his death blamed on the protestants. Catholics are incited to massacre all protestants in retaliation.
