The Smugglers SYNOPSIS:

Accompanied by new companions Ben and Polly the Doctor lands the TARDIS on the Cornish coast of England in the 17th century. There a church warden gives them a cryptic warning message as payment of helping fix his injured finger. He is soon killed by the visiting Cherub who demands to know where the late Captain Avery's treasure was hidden to retrieve it for his master Captain Pike.

Having settled at the local inn the travellers are suspected of the church warden's death and Ben and Polly are charged with murder by the local Squire but they both escape. The Doctor is kidnapped by Captain Pike and his pirates. Pike himself makes an alliance with the Squire who controls the local smuggling ring. While the recaptured Polly and Ben are framed as the real smugglers to revenue man Josiah Blake.

Blake remains convinced the true smugglers are run by the squire and the smuggling alliance has fallen apart as the Squire, Pike and Cherub all separately search for the treasure pursued by Blake while the Doctor realises the churchwardens cryptic message is the key to the burial place of Avery's treasure and tries to lead Blake there before the pirates find uncover it.
